Associated of Los Angeles is the oldest and one of the largest independent
electrical distributors in the Los Angeles area. It is one of the premier
suppliers of quality products to the industrial and commercial markets,
from commodity lines to the high and advanced technological product
lines. Associated has a rich business history dating back to 1928 when
Mr. C. D. Russell, Sr. formed a corporation which bought out the Baker
Electric Company and commenced operations under the new name, Associated
Wholesale Electric Company.
During
the late 1920s and early 1930s industrial activity in the west was not at
all like it is today. The primary sources of business for electrical
wholesalers was the construction industry, government, utility and
institutional organizations. The company’s 74 years of experience in
these types of business has made it a valuable supplier to its many
customers in these businesses.
During
the World War II period, the company’s business energy was directed toward
the war effort. Much of Associated’s business during this period came
from effectively servicing the industrial companies producing basic
materials and products for the military.
A new
business opportunity emerged for the company during the post-war 40’s and
50’s in exporting electrical products for the refurbishing and building of
military and government facilities in the war ravaged Far East.
Through
the early 1950’s the Santa Barbara, Ventura and what is now called the
inland empire (San Bernardino, Riverside) marketing areas were primarily
served by Los Angeles distributors. Associated had a major position in
these markets and still does, particularly along the coast north of Santa
Barbara.
Throughout the 60’s and 70’s Associated was a major player supplying
electrical goods to the international petrochemical industry through
various prominent engineering and construction companies. The company
continues these relationships with current service to these types of
companies both domestically and internationally.
In 1968
Associated Wholesale Electric Company was converted to a holding company.
A new company, Associated of Los Angeles, Inc. was formed to assume all
operations. The founder, C. D. Russell, Sr. retired and his son, Dick
Russell, Jr. became president of the new company. In 1979 the holding
company was liquidated and in the early 1980’s that original name was in
use again with the establishment of a subsidiary of Associated of Los
Angeles, Associated Wholesale Electric.
Many of
the major manufacturers the company represented in the 1920’s are still
associated with the company. Currently the company represents over 200
major manufacturers and carries over a $1,500,000 inventory.
